Dr. Peter Campbell awarded Grant to Conduct Research on Cyber Defense and U.S. Grand Strategy

September 25, 2024

Associate Professor of Political Science Peter Campbell was awarded a $24,000 grant from the Dr. Benjamin Brown IV Fund for Interdisciplinary and Collaborative Scholarship through the Baylor in Washington program. The Brown Fund provides support to faculty “engaged in interdisciplinary and collaborative projects on issues of global importance.”

Based on his interdisciplinary research and publications in the areas of cybersecurity and strategy, Dr. Campbell will use these funds to travel to Washington D.C. to collaborate with scholars and policy makers engaged in the development of U.S. strategy for global cybersecurity. Specifically, Dr. Campbell will focus on how to harness the advantages of defensive over offensive cyber operations that he and his coauthor, Dr. Jeff Donahoo (formerly of Baylor Engineering and Computer Science), set out in in their article ‘Harnessing the Power of the Cyber Defence.’

In this continuation of that work, Dr. Campbell and his collaborators will extend the examination of the advantages of defensive cyber operations to the level of U.S. grand strategy, in the spheres of diplomatic, intelligence, military, and economic spheres.

The effort will culminate in a cyber defense workshop in Washington, D.C., in the spring of 2025 and a special issue in a peer-reviewed national security outlet with a broad readership in academia and policy making circles.
